Q&A
| Q - How important is it to have my system serviced? |
Very important. Servicing prolongs the life, efficiency and safety of your equipment. All manufacturers require yearly service to maintain warranty status and EPA (Enviromental Protection Agency) recommends yearly inspections. |
| Q - How often should I check/change my furnace filter? |
1" filter - check or change monthly 1" electrostatic - clean monthly 4" media - check quarterly, change as needed Electonic (E.A.C.) - clean bi-monthly |
| Q - Can I service my own equipment? |
Yes, but would you the homeowner change the engine in your $50,000 automobile? It is preferable to have it serviced by a qualified service technician. A certified technician is a professional who has been trained to work with the high and low voltage electrical and extreme pressure found on your system. |
| Q - Should I cover my air conditioner during winter months? |
Yes, but only the top of the unit. Covering the top of the unit protects it from possible damage that could be caused by ice and falling snow directly on unit. Wrapping the unit completely will trap moisture inside and cause premature rusting. |
| Q - What maintenance should I do on my air conditioner? |
The most important maintenance you can do is change your filters regularly. Ground mounted outdoor units need to be kept clear of debris, clutter, weeds or landscaping that can grow too close and reduce the airflow to the unit. Also, keep pets away from the unit because per urine can cause expensive damage. Use caution with a weed trimmer around the unit to prevent damaging control wiring. Any additional maintenance should only be preformed by qualified personnel. |
| Q - What can I do to keep my AC running effeciently? |
Keep your furnace filter clean and wash down your outside AC units, keep grass clippings and other debris cleared. Have your HVAC system professionally maintained once a year to keep it running at peek performance and to save you money on operating costs throughout the year. |
| Q - What are the benefits of having my duct system cleaned? |
Studies have shown that duct systems should be kept clean to reduce allergens and dust particles in the air stream of your home and prolong the life and effeciency of your equipment. |
| Q - What can help my allergy symptoms in my home? |
Better filration, humidification, ultra-violet lights and duct cleaning. |
| Q - How do I know if I need a programmable thermostat for my home? |
Are homeowners home during the day or night? Do you change your temperature settings many times during the day or night? Do you have a problem remembering to change your filter? If you answered yes to any of these questions, a programmable thermostat may benefit you. |
| Q - What is the advantage of a programmable thermostat? |
Different programmable thermostats offer many different features. However, because they are electronic, they are all more accurate and efficient than thermostats that contain mercury. With programmable thermostats you can control the temperature in your home at different times of the day without ever touching your thermostat. Because everything is automatic you will never forget to change the setting on your own. |
| Q - Is the R-22 Freon being phased out? |
Yes. The Clean Air Act of 1990 mandated a complete phase out of R-22 and in 1996 a production cap was placed on its production. In 2004 production of R-22 was cut by 25% and the manufacturer of R-22 compatible equipment will be prohibited after 2010. Production of R-22 will be banned completely in 2020. |
| Q - What do S.E.E.R., A.F.U.E. and H.S.P.F. mean? |
S.E.E.R. stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rate (measures efficiency of AV unit), A.F.U.E. stands for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (measures efficiency of furnace), H.S.P.F. stands for Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (measures efficiency of heat pumps). These are the most commonly used terms to describe equipment efficiencies. The higher the better. | | Hiring a heating and cooling contractor?
As seasons change, the inevitable in change in temperature may trigger a need for repairs or perhaps replacement of many heating and cooling systems. Choosing the right contractor to repair or replace your home comfort system is an important decision. Homeowners can make an informed decision by considering a qualified contractor:
1.) Don’t hesitate to ask to see licenses, certifications, proof of insurance and customer references. When checking references, ask previous customers about the contractor’s performance, customer service and whether the project was completed on time and within budget. When the contractor gives you a price, request a written estimate. Ask the contractor detailed questions.
2.) Less is not always more. Don’t choose a contractor solely on price. Find out the range of services offered, such as repairs, scheduled maintenance, 24-hour service and so on. Be wary of low bids, as they may not cover routine services and customer warranties.
3.) Do your homework. Before calling a contractor, familiarize yourself with your current unit and its maintenance history. Learn as much as you can about HVAC systems through newspapers, magazines, trade journals, online resources and dealer and manufacturer web sites.
4.) Recognize a good contractor. He or she bases estimates on a heat-load calculation, conductson-site inspections and asks questions about your heating and cooling needs and concerns before making any equipment or service recommendations. A good contractor also demonstrates knowledge of up-to-date technology and is comfortable discussing newer, more efficient units.

National Fuel Conservation Incentive Program
|
|
|
Residential and non-residential customers in National Fuel’s Western New York service area are eligible for a number of money saving rebates when you buy an Energy Star – rated programmable thermostat or when you replace specified appliances with new, energy efficient models. When you combine the rebates with the projected annual fuel savings realized by using more efficient equipment, you’d be amazed at how quickly these new appliances can pay for themselves. |
|
|
This program is the first of its kind in New York State. This program is designed so that, with others like it, utilities and their customers can partner on ways to use less natural gas, helping to bring balance back to the marketplace and lowering the price we all pay for energy we use. |

On February 17, 2009, President Obama signed the "American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA)" into law. This bill combines spending and tax incentives designed to get the American Economy moving forward by investing in infrastructure and increasing the energy of residential/commercial buildings in America.
Specifically for the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) business, this legislation makes a number of important changes to the existing tax incentives for homeowners who make qualified purchases on high-efficiency HVAC products and equipment in their primary residences. Overall the tax credits available have been increased up to 30% for the installed cost of these improvements, or a total of $1,500 for residential HVAC products installed from January 1, 2009 through December 31, 2010. Check with your dealer / installer for details. |
